Geelong Raid Nets Counterfeit Clubs

On the 22nd May police executed a search warrant on two commercial premises in outer Geelong, where they discovered a number of sets of counterfeit golf clubs.

A male person was interviewed by police and later charged with “Trade Mark” and “Obtaining the Proceeds of Crime” offences.  He will appear in Court at a later date.

Police seized six sets of counterfeit Taylor Made clubs, two sets of Callaway clubs, one set of Nike clubs, 9 Odyssey putters and 2 Cleveland hybrid clubs.  The full sets of clubs were also accompanied with a bag.  The full golf sets were being sold on the premises for $700.00.

Information gathered from the search warrant provided evidence indicating the counterfeit clubs had been imported from China.

The successful seizure of the clubs was the culmination of a month long investigation involving undercover purchases and surveillance.

The affected golf brands were initially alerted to the illegal clubs being sold by their retail partners in the area.  This resulted in a full scale investigation by Global Brand Protection on the suspect. Trap purchases were made and the poor quality clubs were easily identified as counterfeit.

Even though the number of clubs seized was not excessive, it eliminates another seller of poor quality counterfeit items from the market place that compete with legitimate retail sales.

A special thanks should be given to the Geelong Criminal Investigations Unit who provided the required support to execute the search warrants and the resultant seizure of the counterfeit goods.

It was a fantastic result for all concerned.
